Frequently Asked Questions

  • What ages go to your camp?
Camp Maxwelton is for boys 9-15 years old. It is our experience that campers who start at a younger age adjust more quickly.

  • What is the deadline for registration?

We continue to receive applications until we reach full enrollment.

  • What should I bring to camp?
Upon registration, we will mail a packet to you including a list of what you should bring to camp and what you should leave behind.

  • How many campers are in a cabin?
There are between 4 - 8 campers per cabin. Each cabin has at least one counselor.

  • How do I pick activities?

We believe it is important for campers to try each activity offered. Part of our program assigns campers to activities. There is time for campers to choose activities, as well as free time.

  • What is your refund policy?

Registration is refundable up to June 1st. After June 1st, $350 is refundable.

  • Do you have a waiting list?

We basically operate 1st come, 1st served, although children of alumni and local residents do get preferrential status.

  • How do campers do their laundry?

Laundry is sent out once a week to a local cleaner. Campers should bring enough clothes to wear to cover the two day, "in the laundry bag."

  • Are phone calls allowed? What is the best way to communicate?

We ask "no phone calls" please and encourage campers to communicate regularly by writing letters home.

  • What kind of trunk should I bring to camp?

You will need a good, sturdy trunk. There is no size limit but oversized trunks can be difficult to store in the cabins.

  • Can my child be in a cabin with his friend?

At registration, campers have the opportunity to request cabin-mates. It must be a mutal request.

  • Does my child need any spending money at camp?

All your child's expenses are covered while at camp. No extra spending money is necessary.

  • Can I send care packages?
Yes! Care packages are always well received by campers.

If you decide to send a package yourself, please refrain from sending large quantities of food!!  Storage of food is difficult. We feel it better to send only small amounts - NO soft drinks, please! Books, gum, comics, games, etc. are fine.
  • Directions?

If you are driving to camp south on Interstate 81, you should take the Fairfield exit and proceed west (right) on the hard‑surfaced road (Huffman Road becomes Rockbridge School Road which then becomes Sterrett Road) to Brownsburg. Turn left on Brownsburg Turnpike (252), and then take an immediate right onto Hays Creek Road (724). Continuing west, follow the CAMP MAXWELTON signs—approximately 5 miles to Walkers Creek Road (602), turn left and take the first right into camp.

If you are coming from Lexington, take Route 39 west (Maury River Road) (off Route 11 north of Lexington) for about 10 miles to Rockbridge Baths.  There, turn right onto Walker’s Creek Road (602), and follow the hard‑surfaced road for a little over three miles to the camp entrance on your left.
